Piano Lesson: Do You Know What You Learn When You Play Piano?

April 20th, 2010

I guess you are learning to play piano in order to become a better pianist. Do you know that there are many secret learning processes in action as you practice on your piano. Let’s find out the truth!

I presume that you practice on the piano with the hope of becoming a better instrumentalist, pianist and musician and and in order to experience the joy and satisfaction that follows.

The learning processes in action as you try to learn to play the piano can lead you forward towards you goals. However, some things you learn can limit your progress and I think it is important to be aware of these factors.

Let’s take a look at what you don’t want to learn as you play piano! Let me mention three things!

1. At times when you practice on your piano you might experience stress and other uncomfortable feelings due to a deadline in the form of a upcoming piano lesson you don’t feel prepared for or other disturbing thoughts.

The feelings you experience as you practice a specific piece of music have a tendency to be evoked when you play the same piece at another occasion.

2. Can tensions stick to your sheet music? Your actual muscle tension level when you play a piano composition tends to be present when you play the same piece of music in public.

In other words, it will be more difficult to perform and play a piano composition in a relaxed manner when you have practiced it with a high tension level.

3. Can you learn not to play a piece of music? I guess you practice on your piano and take Piano lessons in order to become a better player.

However, if you don’t concentrate on your piano playing and if you play new passages too fast you will probably make a lot of mistakes.

These mistakes tend to slow down the learning process and in fact they will be a part of the learning process. The more mistakes you make playing a particular piano sheet music passage the harder it will be to play it right.

Why is it so? All your earlier mistakes will accumulate and disturb you as you try to play a passage right. To play a passage wrong will become easier and easier the more times you make mistakes.

Is this depressing news? Well if these news will help you change your way of practicing piano playing it will be good news!

You can use these piano practicing news to your advantage! Read on!

1. Try to make your piano practicing sessions to peaceful and joyful occasions by never procrastinating your piano lesson homework and by having the right attitude as you start playing.

2. Always practice a new piano piece slowly and with concentration and with correct posture. If you don’t make mistakes as you practice you will progress much faster!

3. Remember to relax as you play piano. Your piano practicing session can also be a relaxation exercise and if you play piano in this manner it will be beneficial both for your physical and mental health!

I want to learn how to play piano?
…But my mom says it’s too late for me because I’m 16 years old and I won’t be able to be professional or anything…the thing is that her piano level is 10 and she can play very well, and when I was little she asked me many times if I wanted to take private piano lessons… but I was a stupid stubborn kid and I kept refusing… and she was like " Watch, someday you are going to regret this" Well now I do and she says it’s too late for me… and that I should learn to play guitar or something… and that if I really want to play piano, I would have to have at least 3 lessons a week,
but she doubts I would continue taking lessons when I’m in university… But I can’t have more than 2 lessons a week cause i have homework.
I don’t know what to do.I really want to learn how to play piano, and I don’t know how to convince my mom..I don’t want it to be a waste of money either, cause we aren’t very rich.Do you think I have a chance in learning how to play piano well,or should i forget it?
i don’t have any other relatives besides my mom… and she is a perfectionist, so when I don’t understand something she gets pissed easily… and when she comes home from work she is pretty tired, so I doubt she could teach me… I could ask her though.

Well if your mom is so good then she should teach you! That ways you can fit in as many lessons you need a week, even if their short you can and schedule it around your homework in your free time. Plus, they’d be free. If your mom doesn’t want to teach you, then that’s not very nice of her at all. It sounds like you’ll have to wait untill you can pay for it yourself then.

i think she should be encouraging you…but in the mean time learn as much as you can on your own to prove to her you are serious then ask for lessons again

the fact that your mum is a good piano player you should really get her to teach you.

the best way is to be like any normal teacher and constantly beg her until she gives in.

or you could ask her really nicely and explain to her why you didnt want to in the past.

if you tell your dad or a grand parent they will probably nag your mum aswell lol.

i dont think you should forget it unless your not that serious about playing it.

btw too much homework isnt an excuse i didnt have enough time to go out running when i was training for a kickboxing fight so i got up 2 hours earlier in the morning so i could do it. its hard and it takes commitment but hardwork pays off.

    hope this helps =)

Just because you want to learn to play the piano, doesn’t mean that you want to go pro. People do play piano just for enjoyment of it. If she will allow it, I wouldn’t stress about taking extra lessons either to make up for the years you didn’t take them. Just go and have fun. Yes it will be fustrating at first, but if you really enjoy it, it is a worthwhile persuit.

i think it’s cool that you want to learn to play. it doesn’t have to be towards a career; you can just want to play the piano for the sake of enjoying it. i think some colleges offer non-major piano classes, so beginners can learn how to play (mine does-Oklahoma City University). so, you could continue if you really wanted, and if your university had the class. but, yeah, i think you have a chance. if you practice enough, you’ll be good on two lessons a week. if you want it enough, tell your mom what you’re willing to do. i think it would be worth it.

    good luck! :)

I’d guess that 16 is yet pretty young and you will have lots of years to be able to practice so you would be professional in time. Especially if you are naturally talented in music, which there is a good chance that your are. Do you have a music teacher in school where you attend who could work with you some, to see what you can do? Good luck.

It is not too late. It just means you will have to work hard. You don’t need more than one lesson a week BUT, you will have to practice, practice, practice. It’s the practice between lessons where you will make progress. I had many students who started as late or later than you and went on to play professionally but they did work hard at it. It’s up to you how much you want to put into it. Some people start and suddenly realize that it’s not as easy as they thought and they quit. It comes down to how much you really want it.

Well, you could either have her teach you, or you could go for internet lessons. With internet lessons, you can learn at your own pace, you can mess up as many times as you want, and still learn the piano.
