TABS are ok to learn how to play a song, but I would definitely recommend getting a book to learn by. Reason being, if you learn the actual technique out of a book, when you are trying to play a song (say by TAB) and you see a certain pattern or something, you'll have a lot better idea what that means and how you should play it, because you'll know the technique behind it. If you learn by book, you can then use TABS to strengthen the techniques you already know, instead of trying to learn by tab and basically poking around in the dark. I would specifically recommend the book "Guitar Basics" by Bruce Buckingham, probably available somewhere on the Hal Leonard website. Best 20 bucks you'll ever spend on guitar instruction I guarantee, I learned by this book and swear by it. It teaches all the basics of chords, theory, blues, rock, solos, etc, in an easy to follow way.
References :
experience

youtube would have some clips of people teaching you how to play
there are also some great magazines, and 'teach yourself guitar' books at newsagents, and music stores.
References :
it's what i did. start with guitar TABS. find a simple guitar site like www.ultimate-guitar.com. Find a song that is simple and I believe there are tutorials on there on how to read Tabs. if not there are tutorials on how to read tabs all over the internet. They are simple and easy to read and great for beginners/intermediate/and advanced people. Good luck with the guitar
