Can I practice on a keyboard while taking piano lessons?
January 15th, 2010So if I start taking piano lessons, is it ok to practice on a keyboard, but not a real piano? I’m concerned because on a piano the strength of your fingers are important for effects. However on a keyboard it sounds the same whether you punch or press a key. So is it ok?
It’s very important that you get used to the feel of a real piano. If one isn’t available I would suggest practicing on a digital one that has weighted keys. You could practice on the keyboard but when you go to the real piano it’s going to feel a bit weird. I used to practice on a digital and everything went smoothly. Then when I switched to a real piano I found that suddenly things weren’t as easy as I thought. Trills and repeated notes are easy on a keyboard but on a real piano you have to use proper technique to execute them adequately. Also the piano can give a wide range of tones and even the best digital cannot do this. Ear training is just as important as proper technique. Good Luck!

If you are very serious about piano, you should get at least an upright or even a grand piano. But if you are just learning for fun, then yes, a keyboard is fine. Just like you said, practicing on a keyboard will not strengthen your fingers. You need a real piano to really have a good practice session and lesson. Good Luck!

It’s not recommended, but it’s ok to practice on a keyboard while taking piano lessons. It’s better if your keyboard is weighted, meaning that if you press it hard it is loud and opposite if you press it soft, etc. The important thing is to get started learning, and you’ll play on a real piano during lessons anyways. Just make sure that if your keyboard is not weighted that you pay extra attention to technique when you practice. However, if you become more serious about playing you will eventually need to buy a piano in order to improve to your maximum potential and to develop finger strength.
