How Long should i take Piano lessons and drum lessons for techno production?
December 16th, 2009so i’m producing techno/ trance – and want to create more elaborate beats, hence the drum lessons, and i also just want over all knowledge of piano/ keyboard.
would a weekly lesson for 2 -3 months w/ piano then to drums be sufficient enough? i’m a fast learner, and i practice now based on self teaching, i’m just wondering if it would be a waste of money or not. thanks.
For Techno….
Yes…stick with the Piano lessons for sure.
But, for your most complex drum beats…
I would say learn how to program those Drum Machines really.
You can really do some weird drum stuff with those things if you really experiment enough. Also, get a Metronome too to learn your BPMs
(beats per minute) on your songs. Drumming is not easy…trust me! Especially with those really elaborate & complex drum beats you’re shooting for. It took me LITERALLY years to be able to play those off timed drum beats
In Techno, all you really need to do is:
Know programming, how to program MIDI
Drum Machines, MIDI Controllers, Sequencers, Looping, using Synths, Pedals & etc…
Hope this helps somewhat…& good luck on your Techno CD

Being a musician is like being a writer. To be the best, you have to practice, practice, practice. You need to understand your art. Do you know how to read music? Don’t take a few lessons and think that will be good enough. Become a lifelong learner and you will go much further producing techno. Besides, you can still do both at the same time.
